A genuine antique Transvaal folding camping chair, made from tambotie — a rare, hard, richly-scented hardwood limited to South Africa's Lowveld, prized in genuine antique furniture circles. Transvaal tambotie pieces are a recognised category in their own right among South African furniture specialists and auction houses, tied to the region's distinctive 19th and early 20th century furniture-making tradition. This chair has a riempie (woven leather thong) seat. Riempie seating became a South African classic starting with the 1820 British settlers, who needed lightweight, sturdy chairs for a life on the move — using whatever timber and leather were readily available.

- Note: the riempie seat has been re-strung with modern bleached leather thongs, not the original riempies
- Tambotie is an increasingly rare, genuinely collectable South African hardwood — Transvaal pieces are recognised by South African auction houses as their own distinct furniture category
