Antique Stinkwood Folding Camping Chair — Original Raw Hide Riempies

A genuine antique South African folding camping chair, made from stinkwood — this example noticeably older than the others in this set, with softened raw hide riempies (woven leather thong seating) in their original, untreated form rather than a modern replacement. Riempie seating became a South African classic starting with the 1820 British settlers, who needed lightweight, sturdy chairs for a life on the move — using whatever timber and leather were readily available. This is about as authentic as this style of chair gets.

Look closely at the joinery pegs and you'll find genuine hand-carved detail — a small carved rosette worked into the dowel head, purely decorative, on a piece of structural joinery that never needed to look this good. The kind of unnecessary care a factory would never bother with, and a real signature of the carpenter who made this chair.
