A genuine cast metal builder's plate marked "Built in South Africa by Alpheus Williams & Dowse Ltd, Boksburg, 1960," bilingual in English and Afrikaans. Alpheus Williams & Dowse (AW&D) was a significant South African railway engineering contractor — rather than building locomotives themselves, they fabricated and erected the heavy steelwork that let the railway network expand: railway bridges, plate-girder and box-girder bridges, station steelwork, goods sheds, workshops, and locomotive depot structures, undertaking contracts directly for the South African Railways and Harbours administration. During and after World War II, their Germiston works produced box-girder bridges among other heavy steel infrastructure. This plate is a genuine, dated piece of that engineering history.
